BALTIYSKIY 613

BALTIYSKIY is a general serial name of the ships of three different types (projects 781, 781E, 613, 16290 and 16291), the big dry cargo "river-sea" ships, which have covered holds, with forecastle and quarter-deck, with double boards and double bottom, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part. Ships are intended basically for carrying of bulk cargoes, general cargoes and timber.

Projects 781, 781E. The type "Baltiyskiy" (project 781) and the type "Volgo-Balt" (project 791) began the big series of the "river-sea" ships with similar architecture, which was continued with the other types and modifications. Unlike the project 791, ships of the project 781 have three cargo holds, smaller length and cargo-carrying capacity. Modified ships (project 781E) differ by some details of the superstructure.

Project 613. More modern type of the dry cargo ships with similar characteristics and increased machine power. Ships have three holds and can carry cargo on the hatch covers. On the base of this type the training ships were developed, which got the larger superstructure with increased passenger capacity and the second (training) wheel-house. Ships have two holds.

Projects 16290, 16291. Motor ships of the unlimited navigation area, which have two cargo holds. Ones from the family of the dry freighters and tankers of the same class, with some constructive details similar to the tankers of the type "Kolibri". Ships have big sea draught and have to be partially unloaded for passing the inland waterways. Modified ships (project 16291) have increased cargo-carrying capacity and differ by some details of the superstructure.

Ships of the projects 781 and 781E were built since 1962 till 1967 in the USSR on several shipbuilding plants. Up to 76 units were built (ships were assigned serial numbers starting from one; unit number 73 initially had a serial name "Morskoy-1" but was renamed and got serial numbers from the common serial order). Becides the ships with serial numbers three ships got their own specific names. Ships of the project 613 and its training modification were built since 1978 till 1982 in Finland. 16 units were built, among them 5 training ships (ships were assigned numbers starting from 101). Training ships got names after outstanding mechanical engineers and inventors. Ships of the projects 16290 and 16291 were built since 1994 till 1997 in Russia. 10 units were built, among them 5 - of the project 16291 (initially ships were assigned numbers starting from 201). Becides the first two units, ships got names after outstanding russian writers.
